Description
The Access Services Assistant works alongside other Access Services Team members at University's main Library's Service and Information desk, contributing to our mission to promote learning, provide information, and enable access to library resources for all our patrons. This position has a primary focus on service and support during evening and weekend hours.Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Provide outstanding customer service to all patrons whether in-person, via phone, e-mail, or chat.
- Help patrons with research tasks, including navigating the library catalog and database searches.
- Respond to a wide range of informational inquiries about the library and campus.
- Help patrons locate, check out, and return library materials.
- Provide support coverage as needed for the Access Services team.
- Work with full-time staff on projects to further the objectives of Access Services and University Library.
- Assist faculty, students, and other patrons by handling library-related issues, escalating complex issues to supervisor as needed.
- Monitor library systems. Create and update basic records and maintain automated records, reviewing for completeness and accuracy. Utilize equipment such as a computer, printer, scanner, copier, and other office equipment.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Preferred
- Some customer service experience
- Experience using the library and library resources to do research
Required
- Proficient in written and verbal and communication skills
- Strong commitment to excellent customer service and quality
- Ability to work with a variety of clientele which includes university students and staff, as well as community visitors
- Maintains a high degree of professionalism
- Ability to remain focused in a busy environment and handle multiple priorities
- Demonstrates flexibility for as-needed emergency coverage
- Possesses a positive attitude, good work ethic, and careful attention to detail
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office 365, including Microsoft Teams
- Familiarity with adaptive technologies
Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This role offers the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of communication, problem solving, critical thinking, adaptability, and collaborative teamwork.
Work Hours
Up to 15 hours per week.
This position will primarily work evenings and weekends (3pm - 11pm), including during extended Library hours each semester. Schedule varies depending on availability and/or University Library need.
Standard Library Hours are 8:00am - 11:00pm Monday - Thursday, 8:00am - 6:00pm Friday, 10:00am - 6:00pm Saturday, and 12:00pm - 9:00pm Sunday. Details on University Library Extended Hours can be found here.
