The University of Sydney welcomes applications for Sydney Horizon Educators in the academic disciplines outlined below, during an exciting and innovative time. With the introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26, the University has committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education-focused (EF) academic positions, across the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The positions in this opportunity are for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, educational practice and innovation, and research capability (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly recruited group of educators will support an uplift in the teaching capability and student experience at the University of Sydney, while also developing as leaders in the education space at the University.

 

You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to teaching and learning design, delivery, and evaluation in your specialised field while you also contribute to research in relation to your discipline and/or your educational practice. As part of this role, you will also contribute to the governance, leadership, and engagement work of your employing school, particularly as it relates to education.

 

Successful candidates will be expected to dedicate most of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (70%), while also engaging in research (20%) and governance, leadership, and engagement (10%).  Successful appointees support, coordinate, and teach undergraduate and postgraduate coursework Units of Study. Laboratory tutorial, studio class deliveries, and workshop management and teaching may also be a key part of the roles. These positions may also assist and guide the academic coordinators of other units within the discipline.

 

Over time, staff appointed to these roles will be supported to engage with professional development opportunities to build their capability to lead change and improvement in teaching at the University.

 

Your key responsibilities will be to:

 

·       undertake a leadership role in educational innovation, curriculum design and review, contributing to outstanding educational delivery and outcomes

·       design and engage in high-quality teaching and learning experiences which meet the University’s expectations and standards for education

·       deliver outstanding teaching and learning outcomes for students

·       develop teaching and subject materials, working with more senior academics within the University

·       through research and scholarly creative work, contribute to knowledge within your discipline or area of expertise, particularly as it relates to teaching and learning in your discipline

·       develop and refine your research skills, particularly as they relate to evaluating and improving teaching and learning in your discipline

·       maintain quality, standards and excellence in your educational activities and output

·       contribute to the governance, leadership, and engagement work in your school.

School of Media and Communications

 

-        Lecturer in Video Production (Education Focused) (Level B)

 

This role is designed for academics who are passionate about video production and teaching and learning in tertiary education. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated track record of educational innovation. This could include an Advance HE Fellowship and/or a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education or a willingness to undertake such a qualification. Applicants should have a track record of education-related research or a willingness to develop one to complement their work in the video production field. While joining a team of video production practitioners and scholars, the applicant must demonstrate an interest in educational leadership consistent with their aspiration to build a career in the education-focused space.

 

The production program in the Discipline of Media and Communications is a growing field with international recognition. The video units the successful candidate will be responsible for are at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

Applicants must have a completed doctorate.

 

Key criteria:

• a PhD in video production or closely related specialisation 
• demonstrated track record of coordination and curriculum development
• expertise in content creation including pre- and post-production
• outstanding technical knowledge including current industry video production standards

-        Lecturer in Strategic Public Relations for Media & Communication (Education Focused) (Level B)

 

This role is designed for academics who are passionate about strategic communication and teaching and learning in tertiary education. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated track record of educational innovation. This could include an Advance HE fellowship and/or a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education or a willingness to undertake such a qualification.  Applicants should have a track record of education-related research or a willingness to develop one to complement their work in the strategic communication field. While joining a team of world-leading strategic public relations scholars, the applicant must demonstrate an interest in educational leadership consistent with their aspiration to build a career in the education-focused space.

 

The Strategic Public Relations area in the Discipline of Media and Communications is a growing field with international recognition. The units the successful candidate will be responsible for are at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

Applicants must have a completed doctorate.

 

Key criteria:

• a PhD in public relations or strategic communication or closely related specialisation 
• demonstrated track record of coordination and curriculum development
• expertise in media relations, corporate social responsibility (CSR), social media campaigns and/or management, crisis communication or public diplomacy

• professional experience in public relations, government communication, public affairs, or closely related roles 
• publications in relevant journals and fields.

-        Senior Lecturer in Digital Media for Media & Communication (Education Focused) (Level C)

 

This role is designed for academics who are passionate about digital media and teaching and learning in tertiary education. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated track record of educational innovation. This should include an Advance HE Fellowship and/or a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education or a willingness to undertake such a qualification. Applicants should have a track record of education-related research to complement their work in the digital media field. While joining a team of digital media practitioners and scholars, the applicant must demonstrate an interest in educational leadership consistent with their aspiration to build a career in the education-focused space.

 

The digital media program in the Discipline of Media and Communications is an established field of critical approaches toward media and communication. The successful candidate will join a group of internationally recognised educators in digital media, digital cultures and journalism. They will be responsible for curriculum design, development and implementation at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

Key criteria:

 

• a PhD in digital media or closely related specialisation 
• demonstrated track record of coordination and curriculum development
• expertise in critical approaches toward digital media, including media industries, digital cultures, platform studies, or similar scholarly fields
• outstanding media industries knowledge including contemporary production practices
• a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence
• publications in relevant journals and fields.

 

Desired Criteria

 

• advance HE Fellowship or Graduate Certificate in Higher Education
• experience in teaching large-student cohorts

School of Sydney College of Arts 

 

-        Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Art (Education Focused) (Level C)

 

This role is designed for academics who are passionate about teaching and learning in tertiary education and have a demonstrated track record of educational innovation. Applicants must have a track record of education-related research and intend to build a career in the education-focused space, including leadership. Applicants must have completed a doctorate or prove equivalent practice-based experience. Desired qualifications include the Advance HE Fellowship and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.

 

The applicant will have a demonstrable track record of coordination, curriculum development and large cohort teaching innovation in one or more of:

 

Film and Screen Arts

 

• experimental and film and video production and post-production (including visual editing, digital effects, sound mixing, colour grading & Adobe Creative Suite. Video installation and film production, including camera operation, sound equipment, tripods, tracks, cranes, dollies and mobile cameras.

 

Contemporary Art

 

• foundation year or equivalent embracing the sub-disciplines of contemporary art to deliver progressive and innovative majors, minors and degree programs. 

 

 

School of Economics

 

-        Associate Professor in Economics (Education Focused) (Level D)

 

The School of Economics at the University of Sydney is one of the primary centres for economics education and research in Australia and the broader Asia-Pacific region. School academic staff have varied expertise, including theoretical and applied economics, policy and econometrics.

 

The School seeks an Associate Professor in Economics (Education Focused) to contribute to the design, delivery and evaluation of outstanding educational experiences. A track record of educational leadership, including curriculum design and development is essential.

 

Key criteria:

 

·       a PhD in Economics or related field, with a developing knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the discipline and higher education sector

·       deep and broad experience in teaching and learning, with evidence by participation in team teaching within an established program and experience in teaching in a variety of settings

·       demonstrated success in designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives

·       demonstrated ability in developing and maintaining supportive and collaborative relationships with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders

·       a developing research profile evidenced by original, high-quality and independent research in the discipline or associated education-related topics.

 

School of School of Languages and Cultures 

 

-        Associate Lecturer in Japanese Studies (Education Focused) (Level A)

 

The School of Languages and Cultures seeks to appoint an Associate Lecturer in the field of Japanese language and culture. This role is a great opportunity for an early-career teacher and scholar with a strong profile in communicative language teaching, curriculum design and research in Japanese Studies.

 

Main responsibilities:

 

·       teach and coordinate current undergraduate language (beginner through to advanced) units of study in Japanese

·       develop the language curriculum, especially online material for units of study

·       participate in teaching collaboration, including team-teaching of undergraduate units of study as required

·       contribute to academic administration and perform service roles as required.

 

Key criteria:

 

·       a PhD or equivalent in the field of Japanese language and culture (MA holders with an exceptionally strong teaching portfolio are encouraged to apply)

·       native or near native competency and fluency in Japanese

·       excellent communicative ability in English

·       experience in teaching Japanese at tertiary level

·       experience with e-Learning platforms and online teaching

·       experience in developing online material for teaching and blended learning modules for Japanese language classes

·       excellent problem-solving, time management, and interpersonal skills

·       evidence of capacity to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment

·       the ability to assume service roles in administration and planning in the Japanese Studies Discipline.

 

 

School of Humanities 

-        Lecturer in Cultural Studies (Education Focused) (Level B)

 

The Discipline seeks an applicant with expertise in race, diversity and cultural studies to teach into and contribute to the further development of Diversity Studies offerings in Gender and Cultural Studies.

 

Key criteria:

 

·       teaching and research expertise in the areas of diversity and gender and cultural studies.

·       able to teach large undergraduate units as well as Masters coursework units

·       able to teach into units in Gender and Cultural Studies as well as supervise Honours and Masters students on a range of topics

·       committed to social and cultural analyses of race and diversity, including sexuality and gender diversities, and Indigenous and decolonizing approaches.

 

 

-        Lecturer in Philosophy (Education Focus) (Level B)

 

The Discipline seeks applicants to teach into the new Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree.  

 

Key criteria:

 

·       outstanding expertise in political philosophy, and ideally also in philosophy of economics or political science

·       the ability to teach in these areas—both large introductory units of study and more specialised higher-level units—and supervise Honours, Masters and PhD students in their fields of speciality

·       the ability to contribute to a diverse curriculum, with strengths in normative philosophy, metaphysics/epistemology/logic, and history of philosophy.

 

 

School of Social and Political Sciences

 

-        Lecturer in Anthropology (Education Focused) (Level B)

 

The position is based at the School of Social and Political Sciences in the Discipline of Anthropology. We seek a talented and passionate educator who can connect in-depth ethnographic research to innovative conceptual and theoretical perspectives, and which makes anthropology relevant to wider debates across the social sciences and humanities.

 

 

-        Lecturer in Political Economy (Education Focused) (Level B)

 

The position is based at the School of Social and Political Sciences and will significantly contribute to the Discipline of Political Economy’s pluralist, heterodox and interdisciplinary program of political economy teaching and learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The appointee will also conduct research in their field of study and/or in pedagogical practice, design and evaluation, and contribute to educational and other leadership and governance priorities in SSPS.

 

 

-        Lecturer in Political Science and Public Policy (Education Focused) (Level B)

 

The position is based at the School of Social and Political Sciences in the Discipline of Government and International Relations. The Discipline conducts research and teaching in the fields of international relations, public policy, political theory, comparative politics, political science methodology and Australian politics. Within these areas, we have experience in thematic focus on Asia, environmental policies and policy, party policies and security studies among other areas.

 

 

The aims of these education focused roles are to attract and retain the best and brightest emerging academics, within a specialised category of academic engagement for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, pedagogical practice and educational innovation.

They will also have demonstrated ability to conduct research and (at all levels, but particularly at Level C and D) a willingness to develop a program of education-related research over time.

 

 

We are therefore looking for Sydney Horizon Educators who have:

 

·       a PhD or nearly completed PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline

·       experience in assessment, feedback and learning by design

·       experience in contributing to outstanding educational design, delivery, evaluation and outcomes

·       a developing network of relationships with key academic, industry or professional institutions partners and stakeholders

·       demonstrated experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities

·       sound experience of teaching and learning, and the ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels in lecture, tutorial and practical settings.

·       a high level of interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues

·       a record of excellent teaching, learning, and assessment practice in a tertiary environment, as evidenced through student and supervisor feedback

·       high-level written and verbal communication skills

·       the capacity to engage students and enable a supportive, inclusive learning environment

·       proven experience in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives

·       a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching

·       the ability to work collaboratively with other staff, including professional staff, and foster principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

 

Senior Lecturer, who, in addition to the above has demonstrated capacity to:

 

·       demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the key, strategic, education-related issues in the higher education sector and/or the University

·       is an experienced and effective unit, course or program coordinator or director (especially for large classes), as evidenced by student and staff feedback 

·       can demonstrate some experience in people leadership within the higher education sector 

·       demonstrates significant capability in educational leadership, service, governance, and engagement (either through their work at a university or through association with a non-university organisation).

 

Associate Professor who, in addition to above, has demonstrated capacity to:

·       service, governance, and engagement through their prior work in university and/or complex non-university organisations

·       attract nationally-competitive research funding, particularly from the Australian Research Council

·       lead curriculum development than enhances student learning in the discipline curriculum

·       obtain competitive grant funding for their education scholarship

·       leadership within the higher education sector, including demonstrated success in supervising and/or mentoring others (including honours students) to achieve career progression or professional advancement

·       establishing relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of education in the discipline, School, Faculty and University.

 

The position level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, and knowledge assessed by the selection committee.
