About the College/Unit/Department
UGA's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2025. The college offers M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees, and it offers undergraduate degrees in advertising, entertainment and media studies, journalism, and public relations, as well as certificates in News Literacy, Sports Media, and Strategic Health and Risk Communication. The college is home to several research labs and centers, including the Brain, Body, and Media Lab, the Digital Media Attention and Cognition Lab, the SEE Suite: Social Media Engagement and Evaluation Lab, the Center for Advanced Computer-Human Ecosystems, the Cox Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, and the Center for Health and Risk Communication. The college is also home to the Peabody Awards, and it hosts student chapters of the Public Relations Student Society of America, the American Advertising Federation, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Women in Media, the Online News Association, the National Press Photographers Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Association for Women in Sports Media.
The Department of Journalism is home to award-winning and internationally renowned faculty, and it houses numerous initiatives to advance and innovate the field, including the Digital Media Attention and Cognition Lab, the Cox Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management, and Leadership, the Solutions Journalism Hub of the South, and the Carmical Sports Media Institute. Situated in an R1 university, the department places a high value on scholarship, with research in such areas as media psychology, newsroom sociology, media trust and credibility, visual journalism, media law, international communication, and social justice. The faculty regularly present their work at major national and international conferences, publish journal articles, books, and book chapters, and apply for extramural funding. In 2021, the college rescued a weekly community newspaper, The Oglethorpe Echo , which today operates as a nonprofit print and digital news organization staffed by faculty and students. Moreover, Grady Digital Natives, a partnership with the Georgia Press Association and the Georgia Association of Broadcasters, places journalism students in local newsrooms statewide, and a partnership with The Associated Press has enabled students to supplement the AP's on-the-ground coverage of the Summer Paralympic Games and the Women's World Cup.

Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. in journalism or mass communication, or a Ph.D. in a related field that includes a stream of journalism- or mass-communication-related research.
ABD candidates also will be considered.
Position Summary
The Department of Journalism and the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in journalism to begin in August 2027.
The department and college have a collegial and productive culture of research and teaching, engaged students, and promote a supportive environment for individual growth.
The successful candidate must be able to teach effectively in our journalism curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels and in our college-wide Ph.D. program, and regularly publish peer-reviewed research in our field. Mentoring graduate students and service to the college is also expected. The effort allocation for the position is 50% teaching, 45% research, and 5% service.

The successful candidate will have a research agenda in areas related to journalism, news, or informational media. The candidate should also demonstrate a proven strong research record or potential for a strong research record that includes publication of peer-reviewed articles in leading scholarly journals in journalism, mass communication, and/or related fields.We welcome all research methods.
In addition, a candidate should demonstrate an interest in mentoring graduate students and a desire to engage students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. The successful candidate should be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in our curriculum, including courses in their area of expertise. We encourage candidates who can teach courses in areas including: media law, new technology/AI, political communication, media history, multimedia journalism, and/or media management.
